On computational issues of immersed finite element methods
نویسندگان
چکیده
The objective of this paper is to provide a review of recent finite element formulations for immersed methods. In these finite element formulations, independent Lagrangian solid meshes are introduced to move on top of a background Eulerian fluid mesh. This key feature allows the handling, without excessive fluid mesh adaptation, multiple deformable solids immersed in viscous fluid. In particular, pros and cons of both explicit and implicit approaches are illustrated along with subtle differences between incompressible and slightly compressible models. Published by Elsevier Inc.

Erratum to "On computational issues of immersed finite element methods" [J. Comput. Phys 228 (2009) 2535-2551]
We would like to correct the typo with regard to Reference 28 in our manuscript. Reference 28 should read [28] W.K. Liu, D.W. Kim, S. Tang, Mathematical foundations of the immersed finite element method, Computational Mechanics 39 (2007) 211–222. We would also like to point out another review paper on this subject by X. متن کاملOn Explicit/Implicit and Incompressible/Compressible Issues of Immersed Boundary/Continuum Methods
In addition to an overview of the immersed boundary/continuum methods and their finite element formulations, explicit vs. implicit and incompressible vs. compressible issues are discussed. The recent finite element formulations retain the same strategies employed in the original immersed boundary method, namely, the independent Lagrangian solid mesh moves on top of a fixed or prescribed backgro...
متن کاملReducing Computational and Memory Cost of Substructuring Technique in Finite Element Models
Substructuring in the finite element method is a technique that reduces computational cost and memory usage for analysis of complex structures. The efficiency of this technique depends on the number of substructures in different problems. Some subdivisions increase computational cost, but require little memory usage and vice versa. In the present study, the cost functions of computations and me...
متن کاملWave Motion and Stop-Bands in Pipes with Helical Characteristics Using Wave Finite Element Analysis
Pipes are widely used in many industrial and mechanical applications and devices. Although there are many different constructions according to the specific application and device, these can show helical pattern, such as spiral pipes, wire-reinforced pipes/shells, spring-suspension, and so on. Theoretical modelling of wave propagation provides a prediction about the dynamic behavior, and it is f...
متن کاملTime-Discontinuous Finite Element Analysis of Two-Dimensional Elastodynamic Problems using Complex Fourier Shape Functions
This paper reformulates a time-discontinuous finite element method (TD-FEM) based on a new class of shape functions, called complex Fourier hereafter, for solving two-dimensional elastodynamic problems. These shape functions, which are derived from their corresponding radial basis functions, have some advantages such as the satisfaction of exponential and trigonometric function fields in comple...
